This is the set up for AAS on the magnetic board that my husband made long time ago.

All About Spelling (AAS) Level 1: The first part of this level teaches the phonograms. So since he knows that we will skip it. And also we are going to go fast through the middle part because he knows most of the words taught there but it will serve as a good review and it teaches some grammar rules that he doesn't know yet.

Exploration Education activity book above and projects below. We haven't started it yet. I liked the fact that it shows a video, then there is 2 activities to do on the activity book. It seems easy and it comes with pretty much all you need for the projects (you need things you already may have around the house).

This is fun!!! He really likes doing this workbook. You need to read the first word

then it will give you a clue for the word above it and if you still don't get it there is another clue.. you got to work all the way up that ladder...he really enjoys this word ladders workbook.

it helped him also to learn how to draw a flag and other things...so not only he learns math but also practice handwriting.

Using our workboxes helps us to keep all the curriculum organized. So when I fill each workbox hanging file I put one of these curriculums in each number...easy peasy!

I saw this post by Shoestring Homeschool and that inspired me to make one for us. I had the crates and almost all the materials I needed, all I bought was more hanging file folders.

I got to say that this system is really helping me to get organize with our homeschool. My children seem to get very excited about doing their, work what makes everything easier because they don't feel like is me telling them "here do this work sheet," they know they have to go from one to six and they want to do it.

I used this Making Learning fun calendar pages to make the number grid. I printed 3 copies. I used one as a base and cut it and laminated it. I cut the numbers from he other one and I also laminated it. The third copy was used to make the number strips to staple them on the file folders. I used velcro dots for the numbers. I wrote their name with dry erase markers on each workbox.

We use the workbox every other day and we go to our school house every other day. This is at least what I proposed myself this year, let see if it happens like that every week...I bet it won't. I set up the workbox on Sunday to be used on Monday. If we got to number 6 that day what is our goal then that day or next day I set it up for Wednesday...If we don't make it to 6 we finish it next day.

How it works? Once they are finished with number 1 they take it from the hanging file and place it on the number grid. When all the numbers are on the number grid they are done. That is it!

By using this system of workboxes you save a lot of space since you can stack each workbox on top of each other. I have one for each of my children. I ended using what we call the computer room as a school room. Here is where we use the curriculum I got for Umi's charter school. It is a small room so I wouldn't have space for the standard work boxes seen in another blogs.

I can't believe that a system so simple can be such a great organization tool for our homeshcool. It helps me to visualize what have to do by giving me a road map of steps to take. No matter what homeschooling philosophy you like or what ever style of homeschooling you do this system can really help you.
I used a mixture of pocket diapers, gDiapers and the best eco disposable diapers I could find. Let me tell you, stuffing the pocket diapers and washing them wasn't fun...My kids didn't like the gDiapers because there is no padding on the elastic and it would bother their hips...I only used the disposable ones at night and when I needed a break from washing, stuffing and hanging diapers. This diapering system was very expensive, the diapers did not last for all my children, it was a pain and I did not know any better until now.

Now with my third child I had to buy all new diapers and I've decided to try trifold diapers and covers. What a discovery for me! Even though this system was a very old system and not new at all it was new to me. It is the cheapest and the easiest way to cloth diaper a baby. What makes it cheaper? You only need a few covers. If the diaper is not soiled you can reuse it over and over again, so you don't need to spend tons of money. Also, buying the covers and the trifold diapers is cheaper than buying other type of diapers even when you buy it organic as I did. In contrast, pocket diapers once they get wet or soiled you have to wash the whole thing. Now, you may wonder what makes it easier? First, you do not have to stuff them or take the insert out every time you wash them. You save a lot of time and energy just there. Second, you don't have to wash the covers every time you change a diaper. By reusing it you save time and energy. After you wash them you can place them around the washer or in a hook to dry, they dry fast. Third, the trifold diaper can easily be put in the dryer and needs to be folded in half if you like or simply put it in a hamper or basket next to the changing table. Even though hanging the diapers on the line is more ecological and you even save electricity as a homeschool mother of three children I don't have the time for hanging clothes. I figure by using cloth diapers I am already helping the earth. If you are wondering how to cloth diaper and you want an easy and cheap way of doing it try this system!

I use Dandelion organic trifold I bought in Amazon. The cover I use are called Proraps covers. I also bought them on Amazon. They are the cheapest out there, they work good and they are made in USA.
I hope you enjoy your cloth diapering journey and if you were considering cloth diapering your child this helps you to decide and go for it!Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18345674569791796955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591398602811208449.post-42563194054116493502014-08-17T11:00:00.000-07:002014-08-17T11:00:06.242-07:00My Amazing Home Birth ExperienceIt wasn't until 2 weeks or even 2 and 1/2 weeks after my due date that I went into labor. I wasn't surprised because all my pregnancies went past the due date. My midwife explained to me that 40 weeks is an average and to get to that average there were women that went into labor before the 40 weeks and others after. That is why they came up with 40 weeks as a due date for every pregnancy. Saying that we should all know that not every person is the same and even with the same person not every pregnancy is the same. So we should believe in our body and let baby come out when baby is ready to come out....Or if you try to interfere with the natural process of pregnancy and try to speed it up because you CAN'T wait to see your baby or you are afraid to be too over due you could end up with an experience similar to mine.

I had 3 due dates, July 2nd, 4th and 7th. When I passed all the due dates my midwife suggested I take castor oil. I read a lot about it. I found people saying it worked for them and others that didn't work. I will tell you my experience and I hope it helps you to make a better choice than me. In my case I was worried that I was going to be too overdue and like it happened with my middle child have to be induced in the hospital...I did NOT want to go to the hospital at all for any reason....So I did take castor oil. It seemed like a good idea at that time because it was better than going to the hospital and miss the amazing opportunity of giving birth at home as I so wanted. But the castor oil back fired, literally! Three hours after I took the castor oil without any effect I took the second dose. I had it with ice cream. It tasted good. Then it hit me...I had diarrhea (expected) and to make matters worse I had the WORST hemorrhoids EVER! It was burning so bad...It was like I was passing fire for 2 days and1/2!!!! Did caster oil helped me to go into labor? NOT AT ALL....it gave me useless contractions and made me want to go to the hospital and get induced and be over with it...but I didn't go to the hospital...I put up with the pain and the disappointment. I learned my lesson...DO NOT mess with nature...trust your body and that your baby will come out when baby is ready...not when you want.

On July16th I had some stronger than BH contractions and I thought I was going to go into labor...I called my midwife and she cancelled her appointments for that afternoon but the contractions stopped and to my dismay nothing happened. So on July 18th at 2:05AM I wake up with some contractions...they were getting stronger as time passed. At 2:20AM I woke up my husband and asked him to fill the birthing pool. At 2:27AM I called my midwife and I told her I was having strong contractions and I even joked telling her what if they stop like the other ones and you come for nothing? At least I have a big bed we can share it with you! But the contractions just got stronger and stronger...She suggested I walk up and down the stairs but I couldn't I had to get in the pool that by the way it barely had any water... I started to feel a strong pressure to the point I couldn't find ay position to ease the pain...It was 2:55AM I could feel the baby's head that was about 2 inches still inside and my midwife hasn't come. I told my husband to give her a call so he called her at 2:58 and tells her to hurry up. At that time didn't know what to do, so I thought I should push. I pushed once and the baby's head came to the point where if you were looking you could almost see it. I pushed once and her head started bulging. That is when my started screaming "is coming out, is coming out, is coming ouuut!!! HAHA! How about that for a birth announcement for my neighbors! So then I pushed again and her head came out and with her head her whole body!! My baby girl came into the world at 3AM! I picked her up and removed the umbilical cord from around her neck, I sat down to hold her and that is when my midwife came. So I had an unassisted home birth in a way. She came right in time to help her breathe. Phew!

To recap, my labor lasted less than an hour from beginning to end and I pushed for less than 2 minutes and a total of 3 pushes. Wow! The fastest labor and birth ever for me.

I have 3 children and 3 different birth experiences:
Baby #1: Natural unmedicated birth that lasted 16 hours with 3 of those hours pushing...I had him in a hospital....
Baby #2: I was induced at a hospital and I had the epidural. I planned a home birth but due to low amniotic fluid I had to get induced and it lasted about 4 hours and 51 minutes or less ( I can't remember if I was induced at 12 or 12:30ish) andI think I pushed for 15 minutes or so...
Baby #3: Home water birth that lasted less than an hour and I pushed 3 times for 2 minutes.

I wish I had all my babies at home! I never want to have a child in a hospital again....

I am not planning to have more children but if I do I hope my labor is like my baby # 3!!!
I am very busy as most of everybody and as it should my family comes first. Saying that I haven't forgotten about my blog and mostly by my followers!

I am 36 weeks pregnant!!! I am due on 4th of July! I am VERY happy and anxious to meet my little girl. I never thought I was going to have 3 children and even though it was a planned pregnancy it was a surprise to my brain that we were going make the decision of getting pregnant again! So I still can't believe it even if I seem to be following my belly everywhere it goes!!

What it is weird is that all my children were due on a day 4th! Umi on 4th of March, Little Princess on 4th of May and now baby #3 on 4th of July. Also they were all born on a different house! I wonder if I should stop moving!! hahaha!

We have decided to give birth at home. We tried with my Little Princess and it didn't work out and I SURE hope it works out this time. I have my birthing room ready, well...almost ready. I still need to get the pool from my midwife and organize the desk and put 2 boxes away...but I have 99 % of the home birth supplies ready!!! I even have some cool decoration and more!
It wasn't easy but it is exciting that we are finally ready to start!!

We moved from a small 650 square feet home to a 1000 square feet home that also came with a small house in the back yard. So that is where we sat up what we call our school house. Parents do not need a school room or even a school house to homeschool their children. It just happened that the house we bought it had it. Do you want to see it?
I still have to add a few things like a glue sponge that I wanted to make (DIY Glue Sponge) and other things but I am waiting for my husband to make a shelf like the one shown below.

There is a lot going on in my life now and I've been so busy that I haven't had the time to blog or even to set up our Christmas tree yet! It is a good thing in a way because all that is happening it is positive and very exiting. The last day of September 2013 we decided we wanted to have another child and by October 21st I found out I am PREGNANT!!! So I got pregnant in matter of days...it happened so fast that still I can't believe there is a human being growing inside of me. What a miracle...

Another change in our lives is that we bought a house!!! Yes, no more renting for us!! We are still in the process of fixing it up. We stripped all the carpet out and my husband is refinishing the hardwood floors what ended up being a pain. After my husband had it all sanded we let the painters help and they put the wrong stain, they tried in vain to remove it with paint stripper (the stain came out a bit but left a bloody mess) and washed their hands off of it with an excuse that he went to the hospital...So my husband had to clean it up and sand it again...A week later he is now ready to give it the first coat of varnish and hopefully next week we can move! I am currently renting a 650 square feet house. It is a 2 bedroom one bath. In contrast, then house we bought is a 3 bedroom, one bath and the best thing about the house is that it has a guest house in the back that it will become out school house!! It needs to be painted and needs a new floor. With some time I will have it ready to go. I will post about it when it is ready.

I am so excited about all of this that I can't sleep at night thinking and thinking of all the good things that happened to us in the past few months...

Even though I am happy about it I will miss my city and all the fun things we have done here...like walks to the coast, and the walks to see the wild peacocks, my nice neighbors, etc.. We've been living here for over 6 years and it is a bit sad to leave but it is a positive change and it had to be done...We are going to be so much more comfortable and we won't be throwing our money away anymore.

I am hoping this weekend we can get our Christmas tree and make some vegan pumpkin cookies. My husband's speciality is his yummy ginger bread cookies that my kids love. Umi and my Little Princess wrote letters to Santa. He wrote it with his own hands..I can't believe he can do that. And she so cute pretended to write...I will post their letters to Santa when they are done...hopefully in a few hours we can finish them!

I am originally from Argentina and we celebrate Christmas on the 24th with my family that also live here in the US. My husband is American and we celebrate Christmas day with his family.

What do you usually do for Christmas? Do you have a fun tradition to share?

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a super happy New Year!!!

Feliz Navidad!!!! Y prospero Ano Nuevo!!!!

I was trying to make a sensory tub with corn but I couldn't find any for some reason. So I bought bird food and that is what I used! They are sun flower seeds. I bought them at the 99 cent store. I used two bags. I also added spiders, and other plastic rings, an eye scoop, etc. My kids really like to play with it. I also added "invisible" numbers.

Delicious!!!!While looking for a raw and healthy recipe I came across this recipe and I made a few changes to make it a bit healthier even and I have to say that I LOVE IT!!!! They came out super delicious!!

So, for this recipe you'll need:

- 1/4 cup of organic coconut syrup
- 1/2 cup of organic oat milk (you can use any other nut milk. Do not use cow's milk! This is a raw recipe and cow's milk may get sour and yucky...and between you and me cow's milk is for calves not humans.)
- 1/2 cup of coconut butter (Place 2 and 1/2 cups of organic unsweetened shredded coconut in the vitamix (or any other blender or a food processor) and turn it on...you will have to stop it and use a spoon to put the butter down and then turn on again. To make the mixing work faster I add coconut oil (coconut oil or any oil is not really healthy....I think that adding a bit of water may do the job. I'll try that next time) It is not liquid when it is done. It has the texture of the coconut oil when is in the hard state.
- 1/2 cup of organic peanut butter
- 1 Tbl of vanilla extract
- 2 Tbs of organic cocoa powder
- 2 cups of rolled oats
- 4 Tbs of chia seeds (optional)

Directions:

Place all the wet ingredients and mix well. Then add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.

You can enjoy them in these 3 ways:

1) Make them into small balls or flat cookies and eat them just like that!!!

2) Place the cookies and place them in a plate in the fridge and leave it there for about an hour before consumption.

3) Place them in the dehydrator. "Hearts in your food" recommends put it in 140 for about an hour...I like to use less temperature so I have them at 105 and I will leave it for about an hour and a half and check how they look...You really do not have to worry or stress this cookies can be eaten even without putting them in the dehydrator so you can look if they look ready to you then they are!

Store them in the fridge!!

When you eat them they'll melt in your mouth!!!! They are delicious!!! I hope you enjoy them as much as me and my children do!!!

Please let me know how you like it!!Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18345674569791796955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591398602811208449.post-82386701876828943382013-08-12T18:20:00.000-07:002013-08-18T21:46:33.747-07:00Homeschool/Playroom Tour 2013

This is to the right of the door. This shelf is mainly for my Little Princess. My husband made the blue picket fence shelf that is above the brown shelf and it holds all the paints and some of the art related things. The other art supplies, paper and more things I store them in the red art cabinet you can see to the left.

I used an apple crate I bought in Jo-Ann's Fabrics, the green tray is from IKEA and I used a paint stick to hold the tray. You can get crates in ebay or craigslist sometimes even for free. My husband was out of town and I really want it to make it so this is what I came up with. I am pretty sure he would have screw a dowel or a piece of wood instead. But if your husband is not so handy or out out town like mine you can make this very easily yourself.

Materials:

- A crate

- IKEA Trofast tray

- Paint stir stick (free at a hardware store)

- 2 small nails

- A hammer

- Rubbermaid container (optional: I like to use it so I can use the cover and the rice doesn't get full of moths)

This is an example of one we set up. It is a bug sensory bin. This sensory bin is great

because it is raced from the floor without being too hight the child has to stand...so they can get on their knees if they are little or sitting if they are bigger.

I've been so busy that I feel like I am totally neglecting my blog!! You know how it goes....one thing after the other and the time passed by without much time to take a breath...haa...So I thought it was time to take a break and say hello!! I hope you are all doing well and busy but not too busy to stop and take a break yourself.

Sometimes is good to remind ourselves that we are not machines and we have to stop what we are doing to take a well deserved brake and relax. Right now my children are taking a bath...don't freak out just yet!!! The computer is right by the door so I can see them very well...phew!

I am happy because I got most of the North America continent box ready!! Yey!!! It still needs a few details but it is well on its way! I will post it when it is ready so you can see what is inside. I will be working on the others as we go...We just finished the continent puzzle...what it reminds me I made a game!!! I may have a full post on it (I hope) but here is what I did. I had foam squares I bought at the dollar tree and I used two and I wrote all the continents in them...The second one only had a few so I wrote something like "choose and name a continent." So first the child rolls one or both dices and let say it says North America and Europe. The child has to pull those continents off the puzzle map. And you keep doing this until all the continents are pulled out. Then you repeat the same until the continents are back in...My son really like to play even my toddler!

Best wishes to all of you!!!

I LOVE the Montessori method. But learning the method and figuring out what to do could be a bit daunting. So many blogs and so many places that give you suggestions on what to do, how to set up the prepared environment and how to make materials...What happens to me is that I see something in a blog I like then I either try to remember or put a book mark on my computer so it I can remember it for me. When it is time to use it I forget the name of the blog or even the whole idea! It wasn't until I came across The Montessori at Home Book that put all my questions, worries and endless quest for the right info to rest.

The Montessori at Home Book will give you ALL the information you need to properly homeschool your children using the Montessori method. It will tell you how to do it, how to make your own materials with everyday things you may already have at home, how to set up the prepared environment as well as information so you can understand the philosophy behind it. It has links to videos, more information and places where to buy the materials.

With the Montessori at Home Book you have all the information needed in one place! The Montessori at Home Book is an downloadable book so you can have it instantly at home when you buy it. There is no need to wait for the mail man to come a week later. It is right there at your finger tips to start your Montessori program with your children right now.

I have the Montessori albums or manuals as some other people may call it. I always refer to this book because it explains why something is done, how to do it differently, what are materials for and how to make it yourself. This book is the only book you need to get started. It is written for people that have no idea what to do, like me ;-)! or people that already know and want an easy to follow guide. This is a book that it is written in way that anybody can easily understand it and will guide you through the Montessori journey. It is well written and explains all you need to do Montessori at home.
You know how it goes ;-) Anyway, I came a cross a post that Montessori Para Todos wrote in their blog. If you live in Spain, and even if you don't, stop by and visit their store and their blog! The post is about La Educacion Prohibida/ The Forbidden Education.
I am not going to do a re make of their post since it is well written and it is worth to read it, I just want to share with you their post and the documentary about the educational system.

This documentary talks about why the educational system is not working, and much more. It is a 2 hours and 25 minute documentary that it is in Spanish with English subtitles. I highly recommend both the post by Montessori Para Todos and the documentary. This is an eye opening documentary that ALL parents should watch before sending the children to school.

If you can't for some reason open the link to La Educacion Prohibida post by Montessori Para Todos

This is our water wall. We used a lattice, plastic bottles, funnels, pool noodle and 3 buckets from the dollar store ( they were even made in US!)

My husband attached all those things with a screw driver and screws. And to attache the lattice he used strings and he screw 2 screws to the top of the wall so when we leave this house nobody can see the holes! ;-)

Do you have a water wall at home? Please, leave a link to share with others!

Making my own 3 part cards and other things helped me save money and let me be part of the making rather than just buying things all the time. I am proud with I say "oh, I made this." I like making things for my children. That is why I bought this laminator. I use a 3M schotch laminator to make 3- part cards, magnets, and anything I want to laminate. It works really well. It is very easy to use. It has 2 settings for the different thickness of the laminating pouches, for 3 mil and 5 +mil. You plug it in, choose the right thickness for the plastic pouches you have and then turn it on. Put the pouch through the laminator and it comes out warm and laminated. That easy!
My son got this Educational Insights number balance and he really likes it. In order for the balance to not be heavier on one side it needs to have the same number on the other side. So if he puts a weight in the number 6 on one side then on the other side he can put a weight also on the 6 or on the 4 and a 2. It is made out of plastic but it is well built. He really likes it and I recommend it. With this balance he can learn the makings of a number, to add and subtract, heavier vs lighter, and more.
This is an addition to the sensory bin. Our theme is bugs. Even thought this jar is not bug related I always like to add language whenever I can. I make the bin for Little Princes and Umi so there are things that both can do. Like for example, plastic letters for spelling (Umi) and for learning letters (LP), bean pouring, plastic bugs, little jar for putting the bugs, I may add number cards for counting, picture of bugs, etc.

I will post a picture of the sensory bin in my next post! Did you make a bug sensory bin too? Please, link some pictures to share with others!

I am excited to start working with Five in a Row curriculum. As a matter of fact we are starting tomorrow! The first book we are going to row is Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans. I also wanted to have a list of the books by countries so I made it today and here it is to share it with you. I made the list to make planning easier and also so I could using it along with Little Passports if it works out. That is why we are starting with Madeline. The story is based in Paris, France and we worked on France with Little Passports.

I hope the list comes in handy for you too!

Have fun rowing with your child!

For our science sensory bin this week we placed water beads in water and then we observed the changes. I was amazed by the little, fun and bouncy water balls. We did this once before but we chose one color. This time we did a little of all the colors we have. What was weird is that the clear ones were invisible! It may be obvious now that I think about it, but just like a child we did this activity with no expectations. I knew they were going to expand, but what I didn't know is that the clear ones (that didn't look that clear when they were dry and hard) were going to be invisible!

So, if you decide to play with your children with water beads you could try different experiments. For example, choose red beads and put them in red colored water. Would they be invisible too? What if you put yellow beads in blue water. Would they change the color? What happen if you put them in the freezer? You can talk about what things are invisible in the real world. Like a stick bug on a branch. They camouflage with their surroundings. Or things that are there all the time but we don't see them. For example, when we go to the supermarket we are always looking at the products they have, at the floor, at your child pulling his siblings hair, or the little toddler pulling things off the shelves! haha. We don't normally look at the ceiling, or at the art work if there is any. Then is when we notice that those things were there all the time but we never paid attention to it. Before those things were invisible to us even though they were there all the time. Next time you go to the market ask your children to look at places they never saw before!

It helps to make sure that every day they do an activity by themselves and also that it gives them something to do when I am busy or want a break. So the way I set it up is that they both have one daily activity. So on Monday they'll be doing at some point in the day Monday's activity. And they cannot choose another activity from a tomorrow but can choose one from yesterday, but only if they finished the today's activity. So on Wednesday they finish Wednesday activity then they can re do Tuesdays and/or Mondays. This way I make sure they get a variety of activities. Saying that I am not totally strict. If they REALLY want another activity we can switch. It hasn't happened yet though. They always seem happy doing the activity of the day. They only get one activity per day.

So I used binder clips and tape to write the days of the week in Spanish and I placed one clip per space and one on the top ones for their names. I choose an activity that they can do on their own unless I know that that day we'll be home and we are not homeschooling.
